Hello everyone, Happy Friday! I'm ending my week with my review for Raw Spice Bar. I recently received their September Istanbul Spice Box for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. My opinions are my own and have not been influenced in any way. That being said, I gave Raw Spice Bar 5 stars!
I would like to start off by saying that before I used these spices, I had never eaten a Middle Eastern meal before. Sadly, I've never really gone outside of the comfort zone in the food world. It's mostly just Italian, American, and Mexican food for me. So I was anxious but eager to try out these spices. The spices were...
1) Bahart - This spice can be used in just about anything. The blend contains coriander, cumin, black peppercorn, cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, and sweet paprika. I found a Turkish recipe online for Bahart Chicken that we skewered, seared, and baked in the oven. The chicken was very delicious, it had such an a great flavor! It really added depth to the meal and tasted so unique.
2) Urfa Biber - The ingredients that are listed are just Urfa Biber, so it must be its own spice. They say on the packet that the spice comes in, that it's often described as "raisins meets coffee" I can see why one would say that! It smells like raisins and the texture is similar to coffee grounds. We used this spice as a sort of marinade for our vegetables. We took some red pepper, cauliflower, and carrot and brushed them with olive oil and then sprinkled them with the spice and sauteed them. It had a little kick to it paired with a raisin-like taste that complimented the vegetables. It was very tasty.
3) Za-Atar - The last spice, Za'Atar contains thyme, sesame seeds, oregano, salt, and sumac. We used this spice with Naan bread. We took some olive oil and mixed in some Za'Atar. We then dipped our Naan bread into the oil. It has a very delicious and unique flavor and very much complimented the bread. Yum!
Overall, I was very pleased with these products. Thank you, Raw Spice Bar, for giving me the opportunity to review your spices!
